Violence Spirals in Syria’s Suwayda Despite Ceasefire

Tensions are high in Syria’s Suwayda region after renewed violence broke out, despite a ceasefire agreement. Armed groups have attacked government personnel, killing at least one soldier and wounding others. The Syrian government attributes the violence to “rebel gangs” that refused to stop their media campaigns.

According to state media, the clashes began on July 13 between Bedouin tribal fighters and Druze factions, leading to Israel’s strikes on Syrian troops and Damascus. A United States-brokered truce was announced earlier, but it seems to have been breached by both sides.

The region is predominantly Druze, but also home to Bedouin tribes, with longstanding tensions over land and resources. The fighting has displaced hundreds of Bedouin families, who were relocated to nearby Deraa.

Separately, the Israeli military conducted a raid on targets in southern Syria, seizing weapons and questioning suspects accused of weapons trafficking. Meanwhile, ISIL (ISIS) launched an attack on a checkpoint in eastern Syria’s Deir Az Zor, killing five members of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
