A suspect known to Fijian police has been questioned over an alleged sexual assault of a Virgin Australia flight crew member, amid ongoing investigations into three crew members allegedly attacked while out clubbing in Nadi. The crew were confined to their hotel rooms near Nadi international airport and are expected to return home before the end of the week.
Fiji’s deputy prime minister, Viliame R Gavoka, said the alleged incidents are regrettable and expressed concerns for the health and wellbeing of the affected crew members. However, he denied reports that the crew were “detained”, stating they were being accommodated at a local hotel with their permission.
The airline had sent support staff to Fiji amid reports of three crew members being attacked while out clubbing on New Year’s Eve. The Flight Attendants’ Association of Australia expressed concern over the incident, saying it was not a common occurrence and urging people not to speculate or disrespect the crew’s privacy during the police investigation.
The Australian government advises travellers to exercise normal safety precautions when visiting Fiji, citing crimes such as robbery, theft, violent assault, and sexual assault.
