Health officials in Central Virginia are warning of a surge in respiratory illnesses as winter approaches. According to epidemiologist Louise Lockett Gordon, nearly a quarter of emergency room visits last week were linked to respiratory issues, with 11% of those cases being flu diagnoses.
Gordon attributes the peak to late winter weather and increased indoor gatherings, posing a higher risk to vulnerable populations such as young children and older adults. She notes that vaccination rates for flu and COVID-19 have declined in recent years, making it crucial for residents to get immunized.
Despite the seasonal spike, Gordon emphasizes that it’s not too late to get vaccinated. Experts recommend practicing good hygiene, staying home when sick, and keeping up-to-date with vaccinations to help curb the spread of illnesses.
