The Virginia Department of Health is reporting an increase in pneumonia cases as colder temperatures set in and holiday travel increases. The Respiratory Disease Program Coordinator, Lisa Sollot, notes that the rise in respiratory infections is “unusual.” Pneumonia is a lung infection that can lead to fluid or pus accumulation.
Sollot advises individuals in high-risk groups to exercise caution during the upcoming holiday season. To prevent the spread of infection, she emphasizes hand hygiene and cleaning frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, counters, and light switches. The department’s guidance aims to help take care of others while prioritizing individual health.
