Virginia Sees Surge in Respiratory Illnesses, Especially Among Young Children

A recent increase in emergency room visits in Central Virginia due to respiratory illnesses has prompted concern from health officials. According to data from the Virginia Department of Health, about 20% of hospital visits in the region are for respiratory issues, with children under four years old being admitted to hospitals more frequently than any other age group.

The rise in cases is attributed to an increase in COVID-19 and flu infections, as well as other viruses like rhinovirus and enterovirus that cause the common cold. Health officials warn of a significant issue with pediatric pneumonia, which requires hospitalization.

Lisa Sollot, VDH Respiratory Disease Program Coordinator, recommends taking precautions such as regularly washing hands, staying home when feeling sick, and getting updated vaccinations to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses. By following these measures, individuals can prevent themselves from getting other respiratory illnesses like pneumonia.

The region’s high levels of hospitalizations for respiratory illnesses are attributed to the community’s ability to spread the illness well. Health officials emphasize the importance of community efforts to combat the surge in cases and protect vulnerable populations.
