The six-story, mirrored-glass building known to fans of Severance as the eerie office space where characters clock in for work is actually a multi-purpose hub with offices, shops, and eateries. Located in Holmdel, New Jersey, Bell Works was designed by Eero Saarinen and constructed between 1959 and 1962. Originally serving as a research and development hub for AT&T’s Bell Labs, the building was abandoned in 2007 but renovated in 2013 to become a unique destination.
While Severance is not the only show to film at Bell Works – American Horror Story and Emergence have also used the location – it has certainly increased tourism. The building offers no formal tours, but visitors are given free access to walk around its lower levels. Director of photography Jessica Lee Gangé discovered the building in 2019 while searching for a filming location that resembled Severance’s ominous corporate headquarters.
The building’s central atrium, lobby, and parking lot were used as establishing shots for the show, with other scenes filmed on sound stages in New York. Despite being portrayed as an empty space in the series, developer Ralph Zucker says the building is “literally teeming with life.”
