Vitalik Buterin Sells 17,000 ETH as Ethereum Falls 37%

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin sold 17,000 ETH in February, reducing his holdings by $43 million after pledging the funds for privacy and security projects. The sales coincided with a 37% drop in ether’s price to around $1,900.

Buterin initially set aside 16,384 ETH for these projects but has reduced this amount by roughly 8% through small trades via the CoW Protocol to minimize market impact. The Ethereum Foundation aims to deploy the funds gradually over several years.

The sales have also affected corporate holders of ether, with Bitmine Immersion Technologies carrying estimated billions in unrealized losses after its value dropped roughly 60% in six months. The decline has deepened unrealized losses for major corporate holders such as Bitmine Immersion Technologies due to compressed staking yields near 2.8%.
