Vitalik Buterin is working on a “cypherpunk principled non-ugly” Ethereum upgrade as part of his vision for the largest on-chain ecosystem. The development comes after a recent post where critics suggested that Ethereum should fragment and rebuild from first principles.
Buterin has replied, stating that he aims to create an integrated and interoperable upgrade to existing systems, focusing on simplicity and censorship resistance properties.
The Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists (FOCIL) mechanism is set to be included in the upcoming Hegota hard fork, scheduled for late 2026. FOCIL ensures protocol-level censorship-resistance by forcing validators to include all transactions.
The inclusion of FOCIL has been a topic of controversy, with critics arguing that it could create legal ramifications and increase complexity. However, Buterin believes that it pairs well with the EIP-8141 upgrade, which will enable native support for smart wallets and gas-sponsored privacy transactions without wrappers.
As part of his vision for Ethereum’s future, Buterin is also pushing to make a “lean” version of the network by reducing technological complexity through full network redesigns. The long-term goal is to swap out the Ethereum Virtual Machine for RISC-V as the native virtual machine.
