A measles outbreak in West Texas has taken a disturbing turn, with children being treated for vitamin A toxicity after contracting the highly contagious virus. According to Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock, at least nine pediatric patients have been admitted due to severe measles complications and elevated levels of vitamin A, leading to abnormal liver function.
The health crisis is linked to misinformation spread by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who directed the CDC to update its guidance on measles treatment. In a recent article published on FOX News, Kennedy recommended taking vitamin A supplements under medical supervision for those with mild, moderate, or severe infections. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim.
The demand for cod liver oil, which contains vitamins A and D, has surged in the affected areas, with reports suggesting it’s a top seller at local pharmacies. Despite its popularity, health experts warn that excessive vitamin A consumption can lead to serious adverse effects, including liver damage.
The World Health Organization has successfully used vitamin A supplements as part of its strategy to combat measles outbreaks in Africa, where malnourishment is prevalent and vitamin A deficiency compromises the immune system. However, this approach is not applicable in West Texas, where there are no reports of widespread malnourishment.
As the outbreak continues to spread, with over 320 people contracting measles in Texas in recent weeks, hospitalizations have reached 40, and one child has tragically lost their life. The public is urged to exercise caution and avoid spreading misinformation about vitamin A’s role in preventing or treating measles.
