Volkswagen is considering relocating manufacturing of its ID. Buzz electric minivan from Germany to Poland due to production shortfalls and labor strikes. The company’s Hanover plant, where the vehicle is currently built, has fallen short of its 130,000 units target, with only 15,000 deliveries in the first half of this year.
As production on both lines at the plant is carried out in two daytime shifts without night shifts, Volkswagen plans to cut jobs and trim pay for remaining workers by 10%. The strike, which saw over 100,000 German workers walk out for a few hours, comes after weeks of collective bargaining negotiations. Germany’s Volkswagen factory has never seen such drastic measures.
The move would be a blow to the German plant, leaving its future uncertain. Poland is reportedly being considered as an alternative production site for the ID. Buzz. However, it remains unclear what might fill the gap left by the move.
