Vice President JD Vance has stated that the recent censorship activities in Europe pose a greater threat to its existence than Russia. In a speech at the Munich Security Conference, Vance expressed concerns over the retreat of Europe from its fundamental values and warned that the continent is forgetting the lessons of the Cold War.
Vance specifically targeted former European Commissioner Thierry Breton, who suggested that if the right-wing German AfD party won elections in Germany, Romania’s election results could be annulled. Vance called out this statement as “shocking” to American ears, arguing that it showed a lack of commitment to democratic values.
The vice president also criticized the organizers of the Munich conference for banning lawmakers representing populist parties from participating in discussions. He argued that this move was reminiscent of Soviet-era censorship policies and that Europe had forgotten the lessons of the Cold War.
Vance’s concerns extended to several European countries, including the United Kingdom, where a law has been passed that restricts free speech around abortion clinics. In Sweden, Danish activist Rasmus Paludan was sentenced to four months in prison for burning copies of the Quran.
Vance concluded his speech by emphasizing that the crisis facing Europe is not due to external threats, but rather its own internal weaknesses. He argued that if Europe is afraid to listen to its own citizens’ voices and opinions, then there is no security to be had. The vice president’s words came as a surprise to many in attendance, who were expecting details on President Donald Trump’s plan for peace between Russia and Ukraine.
