Four former Volkswagen executives have been found guilty of fraud over the company’s role in the “Dieselgate” scandal. The Braunschweig Regional Court in northern Germany has convicted two executives to several years in prison, while two others received suspended sentences.
The verdict brings an end to a massive trial that began almost four years ago. In 2015, Volkswagen admitted to manipulating diesel car emissions tests, leading to widespread outrage and a deep crisis for the company.
Volkswagen is facing numerous lawsuits, with estimated costs exceeding €30 billion ($34 billion). The scandal has also led to significant changes in global regulations for car manufacturers.
Former CEO Martin Winterkorn was originally set to stand trial alongside the four defendants but had proceedings suspended due to health reasons. It remains unclear when his case will resume.
