VW Workers to Launch Rolling Strikes Against Cost-Cutting Plans

Volkswagen workers in Germany will stage a rolling four-hour strike on Monday, as negotiations over pay cuts and factory closures reach their fourth round. The strikes, planned at nine factories across the country, follow a two-day walkout earlier this week.

The Industrial Trade Union IG Metall plans to increase pressure on management with a protest rally in Wolfsburg, the world headquarters of Volkswagen. The union’s Thorsten Gröger said that workers will send “a loud signal” to the company’s leadership, echoing their success from December 2 when around 100,000 strikers took part.

The strikes will start at 10:30 am on Monday, coinciding with a fourth round of negotiations. Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume has defended the proposed cost-cutting program, which includes wage cuts, plant closures, and redundancies. The union is opposed to these measures, calling them “serious” and saying that urgent action is needed.
