Waffle House has dropped its 50-cent per egg surcharge after prices fell to a six-month low. The iconic diner chain had implemented the surcharge in February due to exceptionally high egg prices caused by bird flu-related shortages.
Egg prices skyrocketed to $6.23 per dozen in March but have since dropped to around $2.56 as of Tuesday. As a result, Waffle House announced that it would remove its surcharge once egg prices stabilized.
The chain operates approximately 2,100 locations across the nation and serves over 272 million eggs annually, with more than half coming from Rose Acre Farms affected by bird flu outbreaks. The US Department of Agriculture invested $1 billion in improving farmers’ biosecurity measures to combat the shortage.
Waffle House’s decision comes after Cracker Barrel used its surcharge as a marketing tactic to attract customers. The chain waited a month to announce the removal of the surcharge, sparking confusion among customers.
