Wake Forest Football Coach Dave Clawson Resigns

Wake Forest head football coach Dave Clawson has resigned, according to the university’s announcement on Monday. Clawson, 57, will remain at Wake Forest as a special adviser to athletic director John Currie. In his new role, he will be actively involved in fundraising efforts.

Clawson expressed gratitude for his time at Wake Forest, calling it “the honor of my career.” He credited the university and its people with helping him achieve great things during his 11-year tenure, which included six winning seasons and seven straight bowl appearances. Clawson’s departure comes after two struggling seasons, during which the Demon Deacons finished 4-8 in each of the past two years.

Clawson compiled a 67-69 record at Wake Forest, with a 5-2 mark in bowl games. He was named ACC Coach of the Year in 2021, leading the Demon Deacons to an 11-3 season and the ACC championship game. The university did not announce plans to replace Clawson immediately.
