Two Walgreens stores in the Syracuse area are set to close next month. The Cicero location at 7939 Brewerton Road is closing on April 24, while the Chittenango store at 1365 W. Genesee St. will shut its doors on April 30.
The closures are part of Walgreens’ plans to close around 500 stores in fiscal 2025 and a total of 1,200 stores over the next three years. Despite operating over 8,500 locations nationwide, the chain is facing significant financial challenges.
According to Jennifer Cotto, speaking on behalf of Walgreens, increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are forcing the company to re-evaluate its strategy. The majority of employees at the closing stores will be reassigned to other locations.
This latest round of closures comes after nearly half a dozen Walgreens in the Syracuse area have shut down in recent years.
