Walking Can Boost Brain Function Says New Study

A recent study by Penn State has found that walking and performing simple physical movements can improve cognitive processing speed in adults. The study, led by Jonathan Hakun, involved 200 middle-aged adults who used a smartphone app to track their physical activity. Participants who engaged in daily physical routines showed an enhancement of their cognitive processing speed by four years.

According to the lead author, Jonathan Hakun, simple movements such as household chores and walking the dog can contribute to a healthier lifestyle without requiring intense exercise. The study also found that brief bursts of movement can enhance brain function, particularly when it comes to counteracting age-related decline in physical and cognitive abilities.

Interestingly, the study did not find any impact on working memory, suggesting that physical movement has an immediate effect on the brain rather than long-term cognitive skills. The researchers emphasize that every movement counts, regardless of its intensity or duration, making walking a simple yet effective way to boost brain function.
