Walmart Broccoli Recall: Listeria Contamination Alert

A recall notice has been issued for Braga Fresh’s 12-ounce Marketside Broccoli Florets sold at Walmart stores due to potential listeria monocytogenes contamination. The FDA announced the recall on December 31, citing a discovery of the bacteria in a random sampling from a Texas store location.

The affected product has a best-if-used-by date of December 10, 2024, and is no longer in stores. However, the FDA is sending out the notice as an abundance of caution for consumers who may have purchased the product and stored it in their freezers.

Listeria monocytogenes is a hardy bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in vulnerable populations, including young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. The FDA warns that healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, and abdominal pain, but the infection can also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recall affects 20 states, including Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. If you purchased the product and still have it in your freezer, the FDA advises against consumption and recommends immediate discard.

Consumers can check the UPC code on the back of the packaging (“6 81131 32884 5”) or the printed “Best if Used by Date Dec 10, 2024” and lot code “BFFG327A6” on the front to determine if their product is affected.
