A voluntary recall has been issued for broccoli sold at Walmart stores across nearly two dozen states due to potential listeria contamination. The affected product, Marketside Broccoli Florets from Braga Fresh, was found to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes after random sampling by Texas Health and Human Services.
Consumers who purchased the 12-ounce bags of broccoli, which bear a UPC code of 6 81131 32884 5 and a best-used-by date of Dec. 10, 2024, are advised to discard the product immediately if they have frozen it for later use.
No illness has been reported in connection with the recall, but listeriosis can be a serious condition, especially for vulnerable populations such as older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
The affected states where the broccoli was sold include Michigan, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Consumers can check their frozen broccoli for the recalled product’s characteristics before disposal.
