Walmart bosses have introduced a new rule banning headphones on the shop floor to address growing concerns from customers and store managers about employees’ lack of attention. The ban, which was posted on Reddit, warns staff that they will be reprimanded and potentially “coached” if caught wearing headphones.
However, many employees are resisting the change, citing the importance of listening to their colleagues and following safety protocols. Some even joked that they would wear headphones under a ski mask when it’s cold. Customers have also long complained about the issue, saying it creates an air of distance and reduces spatial awareness in tight aisles.
The move comes as Walmart continues to undergo significant restructuring efforts, including mass layoffs at various locations. The company has been cutting jobs in its global technology operations, e-commerce fulfillment, and ad sales division to cut expenses and simplify operations.
Despite the new rule, it’s unclear how effective it will be in addressing customer complaints. With over 1.6 million US workers and more than 2.1 million globally, Walmart is one of the largest private employers in the country.
