Walmart is set to expand its drone delivery service to customers in five states, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa. The retail giant aims to launch the service at 100 stores within the next year.
The drone delivery option will be available through the Wing app, where customers can request items to be delivered via drone. The drones have a range of up to six miles from stores. Walmart plans to offer flexible deliveries, including speedy options by van.
According to senior vice president Greg Cathey, the most frequently delivered items include eggs, ice cream, pet food, and fresh fruit. However, the rollout has been slow-going, with stops and starts. Despite this, Walmart aims to expand its drone delivery service further in the coming years.
The company’s expansion is part of a broader effort to compete with rival Amazon on convenience and low prices. With over 4,600 stores across the US, Walmart has already implemented an Express Delivery service that drops purchases at customers’ doors in as fast as 30 minutes.
Amazon has also been testing drone deliveries, but its progress has been slower than expected. The e-commerce giant aims to deliver 500 million packages by drone per year by the end of the decade through its Prime Air service.
