US retail giant Walmart has responded to President Donald Trump’s directive to “eat the tariffs,” saying it won’t pass import costs onto consumers despite imposing price hikes due to higher tariffs.
The company’s CEO, Douglas McMillion, told investors that tariffs on countries like Costa Rica and Peru are putting pressure on imported items. Walmart’s CFO, John David Rainey, warned that prices will likely rise in the coming weeks, with electronics, toys, and food being among the hardest hit.
Trump had previously accused Walmart of unfairly blaming his tariffs for their expected price increases. However, Walmart maintains that it is working to keep prices as low as possible while also operating within its thin retail margins.
Walmart’s stance comes as other US retailers warn of likely price hikes due to Trump’s tariffs. The company has joined a growing list of companies avoiding profit guidance in the second quarter, citing uncertainty around the tariffs’ impact on their businesses.
