The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that certain Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart stores in Pennsylvania may be contaminated with radioactive Cesium-137. The contamination was detected in a single shipment of imported frozen shrimp arriving at four US ports.
According to the FDA, the level of Cs-137 detected is below their Derived Intervention Level of 1200 Bq/kg, which is considered low enough not to pose an acute hazard to consumers. However, the agency advises against eating, selling, or serving the affected shrimp to minimize exposure to low-level radiation over a long period.
The Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp in question were imported from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, an Indonesian company that does business as BMS Foods. The recalled product has the best buy date of March 15, 2027, and includes specific lot codes.
Consumers who have purchased these products are advised to discard them or contact Walmart for a refund. The FDA is working with distributors and retailers to prevent similar incidents in the future.
If anyone suspects exposure to elevated levels of cesium, they should consult their healthcare provider, as prolonged low-dose exposure can lead to an increased risk of cancer.
