US retailers Walmart and Target are showing sharp price increases for various products, sparking concerns about the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
Walmart’s CFO recently stated that tariff rates were “too high” and warned that prices would rise on certain items. However, analysts believe the overall effect will be a small percentage of total spending.
Some notable examples include a 38% increase in the price of a Jurassic World T. Rex toy at Walmart, from $39.92 to $55. Similarly, a Baby Born doll saw a 43% jump from $34.97 to $49.97. These increases are attributed to increased tariffs on imported goods.
A third-party website tracking Walmart prices, AisleGopher, shows the prices of these items fluctuated significantly before the increase. Walmart has maintained its commitment to keeping prices low despite small retail margins.
While the price hikes are concerning, companies can choose to raise prices for various reasons. Target CEO Brian Cornell stated that he would aim to offset new import costs elsewhere if necessary. However, a US federal court ruled against President Trump’s tariff strategy, limiting his authority.
Walmart has been reducing its reliance on Chinese imports, which were subject to the steepest tariffs. The company sources about 60% of its US sales from domestic suppliers. Despite this, some products still experience price increases due to increased tariffs.
