Wanamaker Grand Court Organ to Play Final Hourly Performances at Macy’s

The iconic Wanamaker Grand Court Organ in Philadelphia will play hourly performances until its final closure on Sunday, marking a poignant farewell for the department store. The organ, which has been an integral part of the city’s music scene for decades, will be preserved by TF Cornerstone, the new owner of the Wanamaker Building.

Peter Richard Conte, who has been the organist since 1989, will perform along with other organists in free recitals starting at 9 a.m. and ending around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. The event, dubbed “Make A Joyful Noise,” aims to send the store out on a high note.

TF Cornerstone has stated its commitment to preserving the historic instrument, which was acquired by Macy’s in 2006. The company plans to work closely with stakeholders, including the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ and other parties, to determine the best path forward for the organ’s future care and stewardship.

The preservation effort is seen as a positive move by local organizations, including the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. “We are encouraged by the tone and content of TF Cornerstone’s statement,” said Paul Steinke, executive director of the alliance.
