A suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was recognized by police at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s, where he was eating a hash brown. Luigi Mangione, 26, was wearing a medical mask and a dark jacket when officers identified him as the suspect. The New York Police Department used a combination of old-school detective work and new-age technology to track down Mangione, who had been in hiding since the shooting outside a Manhattan hotel last Wednesday.
Mangione’s alias was later found to be a fraudulent New Jersey ID, which matched an ID he used to check into his New York City hostel before the shooting. Police also found evidence of a handwritten manifesto on his person, which revealed Mangione’s motivation for the killing – anger against corporate America and the health insurance industry. He has been charged with murder, among other crimes, and will face extradition to New York to stand trial.
