Warner Bros Closes Development Studios, Scraps Wonder Woman Game

Warner Bros Games is making significant changes. The company has scrapped its planned Wonder Woman game and closed three development studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros Games San Diego.

The decision comes as part of a “strategic change of direction” to focus on its key franchises like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. The company cited the need to prioritize quality over quantity in developing games.

Monolith Productions had been working on the Wonder Woman game, which will no longer be moved forward. Warner Bros acknowledges the team’s talent but believes it can’t deliver a high-quality experience for the character within its current priorities.

CEO David Zaslav stated that the company aims to “deliver more consistency” and is looking at licensing its franchises to third-party specialists instead of developing them in-house, which has proven costly.

The move comes after the company’s top-selling title Hogwarts Legacy in 2023. Warner Bros Discovery reported a $100 million impairment charge for underperforming releases like MultiVersus.

Zaslav also mentioned that there’s interest from other companies to acquire Warner Bros’ intellectual properties. The division will report fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday.
