Warner Music Group Settles AI Music Startup Lawsuits

Warner Music Group (WMG) has reached a deal with Suno to settle its copyright lawsuit against the AI music startup. The agreement will allow for new music creation, interaction, and discovery while compensating artists, songwriters, and the wider creative community.

WMG sold its live music platform Songkick to Suno for an undisclosed amount. Suno plans to launch advanced models that require paid accounts for downloading audio, but users on the free tier can play and share songs made on the platform. Artists under WMG’s umbrella will have control over their content used in AI-generated music.

CEO Robert Kyncl said the deal is a victory for the creative community, expanding revenue and delivering new fan experiences. This settlement comes after WMG settled its lawsuit with AI music startup Udio and entered into a licensing deal for an upcoming AI music service launching in 2026.

The deals mark a significant shift in the music industry’s approach to AI, following similar lawsuits from Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. Despite this, investor confidence remains high, as Suno raised $250 million at a $2.45 billion post-money valuation.
