Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway has made significant investments in several companies, including Domino’s Pizza, Pool Corp., and Constellation Brands. The conglomerate’s latest financial disclosures show that Buffett and his deputies have boosted stakes in these companies, which are known for generating stable returns.
Berkshire Hathaway has increased its stake in Pool Corp. to $204 million, up from $152 million, and Domino’s Pizza to $1 billion, up from $549 million. The company has also initiated a significant stake valued at $1.2 billion in Constellation Brands, the maker of Corona, Pacifico, and Modelo.
Two scholars of Buffett’s investment style believe that the pizza and beer choices were likely made by either Todd Combs or Ted Weschler, who oversee smaller investment portfolios under Buffett’s guidance.
Market observers have been closely watching Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio holdings, as the company sits on a large cash reserve valued at over $300 billion. In this latest round, Berkshire has held its stake in Apple and trimmed its stakes in Bank of America, Citigroup, and Capital One Financial.
Experts note that the investments look like they were executed by Combs and Weschler, who have been successful with their smaller investment portfolios. Darren Pollock, a portfolio manager at Cheviot Value Management, says that Domino’s Pizza has been a solid growth business despite some challenges.
The value of Constellation Brands’ stake, $1.2 billion, suggests that Buffett may be making the investment himself. Pollock notes that Constellation Brands is a steady growth business with a strong portfolio of well-known brands like Corona and Modelo, which appeals to Buffett’s investment style.
Berkshire Hathaway has sold off its entire stake in retailer Ulta Beauty, which was held by Smead Capital Management. Bill Smead attributes the decision to Combs and Weschler likely deciding they wanted to invest in another stock.
The value investor’s annual letter to shareholders is due later this month, and investors are eagerly awaiting information about Berkshire Hathaway’s recent investments.
