The Golden State Warriors have acquired Dennis Schroder, a valuable rotation piece who may not last the season with the team. According to Marc Stein’s latest Substack post, Schroder can be traded again this season and could be part of a package to get a star-level player before February’s trade deadline.
The Warriors were aggressively pursued by Lauri Markkanen and Paul George during the offseason, but it seems they will target Jimmy Butler instead. Butler is currently averaging 18.6 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds per game, with a 36% three-point shooting percentage.
However, the Warriors are unlikely to acquire Butler due to concerns over their current roster. One potential trade target could be Paul Reed, but it’s unclear if the Sixers will make a move before the deadline due to luxury tax concerns.
Another possibility is acquiring Cameron Johnson from the Nets, who would require Jonathan Kuminga in return. The Warriors had interest in trading for both players.
The Pelicans are open to trading young pieces like Herbert Jones and Yves Missi, while the Lakers aim to add depth with a move before the deadline. The Kings are also dangling Kevin Huerter’s contract to upgrade their roster.
Dennis Schroder is currently averaging 18.4 points, 7 assists, and 3 rebounds per game, making him an attractive piece in a trade package. However, his value is not on par with that of Jimmy Butler, who is considered the better player due to his intangibles like defense, basketball IQ, consistency, and postseason numbers.
With the Warriors likely to acquire another young player before the deadline, Schroder’s role may be limited. While he can provide scoring punch, he won’t help the team in the same way that a second star would. With Curry needing help at shooting guard, front office officials will need to find a suitable replacement.
In related news, Klay Thompson recently scored 29 points, and Wiggins is currently in his prime. A trade for Butler or another young player could make sense for the Warriors, but it’s unclear what their plan of action will be.
