The Washington Mystics have traded two-time WNBA All-Star Ariel Atkins to the Chicago Sky in exchange for the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft. The trade also includes swap rights for Chicago’s 2027 first-round pick and its second-round pick.
Mystics general manager Jamila Wideman described the move as “really difficult,” but deemed worthwhile for the franchise’s future. Atkins, 29, was the last remaining member of Washington’s 2019 championship roster. The trade gives Washington an opportunity to select talent at the top of the upcoming draft and enhance its draft potential in the years to come.
The deal marks a significant roster decision in Washington’s new era, which began with Wideman’s hiring as general manager earlier this offseason. The Mystics also retooled their roster over the winter, acquiring veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot, who will pair with Atkins’ replacement on the backcourt.
Chicago Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca praised Atkins, calling her an “All-Star caliber contributor” and noting that she is a threat on both ends of the floor. However, the decision to swap Atkins for draft picks carries potential risk, as all four players involved (Atkins, Vandersloot, Nurse, and Allen) are set to become free agents after this season.
The trade also benefits Washington in the long term, with swap rights for Chicago’s 2027 first-round pick potentially paying off in two years. The Mystics should have more continuity than most other franchises in 2026, with a roster full of players on rookie contracts.
