Wastewater’s Hidden Dangers: Forever Chemicals Tainted Drinking Water Nationwide

The world faces multiple crises, including climate change and water scarcity, prompting a growing reliance on treated wastewater to sustain daily lives. However, researchers have discovered that even after treatment, wastewater contains high levels of “forever chemicals,” also known as PFAS. These chemicals are linked to cancer and other diseases, yet their health effects remain largely unknown.

A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that six types of PFAS were present in wastewater samples nationwide, with some treatment facilities failing to remove them effectively. The contaminated water then flows into rivers, lakes, and ultimately, drinking water supplies.

The research highlights a critical issue: approximately 50% of America’s drinking water sources are downstream of wastewater sites. Using modeling, the study found that up to 23 million people are already exposed to PFAS from wastewater contamination.

Experts emphasize the need for further regulations on PFAS sources. The widespread presence of these chemicals in treated wastewater raises concerns about reusing sewage and polluted industrial water, as well as agricultural practices that rely on sludge contaminated with PFAS.
