Waymo Launches First International Autonomous Road Trip in Japan

Waymo, a leading autonomous vehicle company, is partnering with Nihon Kotsu and GO to bring its self-driving technology to Tokyo for the first time. The initiative marks a significant step towards expanding Waymo’s presence globally.

The upcoming road trip will enable Waymo’s Driver to learn and adapt to Japan’s unique driving environment, including left-hand traffic and dense urban conditions. This experience will help improve the safety and performance of Waymo’s technology in one of the world’s most populous cities.

Waymo is working closely with local authorities, government officials, and community groups to understand Tokyo’s transportation needs and ensure a responsible implementation of its autonomous vehicle system. The company’s partnership with Nihon Kotsu will oversee the management and servicing of the Waymo vehicles.

The first all-electric Jaguar I-PACEs equipped with Waymo’s autonomous driving system are expected to arrive in Tokyo by early 2025. Initially, Nihon Kotsu drivers will operate the vehicles manually to map key areas of the city, before Waymo takes control of the vehicles in subsequent phases.

This expansion is part of Waymo’s commitment to innovative transportation solutions and aligns with Japan’s vision for a futuristic transportation system. By partnering with local stakeholders, Waymo aims to provide safe and efficient mobility services to Tokyo residents.
