The World Council of Churches (WCC) has made available its extensive digital archive, Life and Work Digital Collection, comprising over 300 publications and 35,000 pages, since the Universal Christian Conference on Life and Work in Stockholm in 1925. This unique collection represents a century of ecumenical social ethics and action, offering a wealth of information on key issues such as peace, economic justice, human rights, climate justice, and more.
The digital archive includes reports, conference proceedings, study documents, pamphlets, and other materials that showcase the work of Christian churches in addressing pressing global concerns. The collection tells the story of how churches came together to witness on critical issues and gives insight into the development of ecumenical social ethics over the past century.
Bishop Dr Heinrich Bedford-Strohm praised the archive as a “living legacy” that will inspire future generations. Rev Prof Dr Jerry Pillay, WCC general secretary, noted that the collection is a testament to the ongoing commitment of the WCC to creating a more just and peaceful world.
The launch of the digital library makes it possible for students and researchers worldwide to access this valuable resource, facilitating research and scholarship on ecumenical social ethics. The archive’s availability online underscores the WCC’s dedication to preserving its history and promoting interfaith understanding.
The Life and Work Digital Collection is a significant achievement, offering a unique window into the history of ecumenical movement and its contributions to global issues.
