The follow-up to 2022’s Barbarian, Jordan Peele’s passion project that Zach Cregger was determined to land, has finally arrived. The big, bold, and better-than-expected Weapons boasts an all-star cast and a tantalizing premise: 17 children from the same class vanish in the dead of night. As we follow multiple viewpoints through the police investigation, teacher, parent, cop, small-time criminal, and one kid’s story, Cregger crafts a thrilling slow build that keeps us engaged.
However, beneath its slick surface, Weapons struggles with an illogical script, exasperating inconsistencies, and a lack of surprise or sophistication. The film is more straightforward than it initially seems, relying on brutish force rather than nuance. While Cregger’s direction remains confident and immersive, the finale falls short, prioritizing shock value over meaningful impact.
Despite these shortcomings, Weapons is still an enjoyable, reactive experience with a big audience. Cregger skillfully conjures mood and draws fantastic performances from his cast. However, he misses the mark by not adding more depth to his storytelling.
Weapons hits theaters in Australia on August 7, and the UK and US on August 8.
