Media personality Wendy Williams has spoken out about feeling “trapped” in a guardianship that she claims is stifling her life, despite being diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia.
Williams, 60, joined The Breakfast Club radio show on January 16 to discuss her situation, saying she’s “not cognitively impaired” but feels like she’s living in prison. She criticized her guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, for controlling her finances and where she lives, and claims she has only $15 to her name.
A GoFundMe has been started to help Williams secure her freedom from the guardianship, which she was placed under in 2022 after being deemed “incapacitated” by her wealth manager. The campaign has raised $4,000 of its $50,000 goal so far.
Williams described her living situation as a small apartment with limited amenities, where she’s not allowed to leave or see people. She claims to be isolated and spends most of her time watching TV, listening to the radio, and looking out the window. Her possessions are being held by Morrissey, who is also suing A&E and Lifetime for “exploiting” Williams.
Williams expressed concerns about retaliation from Morrissey if she speaks out further, despite feeling like she’s being held hostage. She fears losing her phone or being moved to a new location, cutting off contact with her family.
The situation has sparked support among Williams’ fans, who are calling for her freedom and an end to the guardianship. A petition has been started to “Free Wendy,” highlighting concerns about the fairness and legitimacy of the system that placed her under guardianship.
