Media personality Wendy Williams appeared on “The View” to defend herself against claims that she is mentally incapacitated. The former talk show host has been under a court-appointed guardianship since 2022 and spoke to the show via phone about why she made the decision to undergo an independent evaluation.
Williams explained that she needed a “breath of fresh air” and wanted to see a doctor, which led her to be taken to the hospital. She denied allegations that she is mentally impaired, stating that she passed her competency test with flying colors.
The 60-year-old is living in a memory care unit at an assisted living facility, where she claims she is not allowed visitors and only stays on her floor. Her guardian and the judge involved in her case have been criticized by Williams, who feels they are suffocating her life.
Williams has been under guardianship since 2022 after her bank froze her account due to unusual spending. She agreed to the arrangement to help with finances but now claims it’s controlled her every move. She wants to terminate the guardianship and move on with her life.
In February, Williams was diagnosed with progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. However, she maintains that she is not mentally impaired, despite being diagnosed with these conditions. Her team has been working to get a motion filed in her guardianship case to gain more control over her life.
The situation highlights the tension between Williams’ desire for independence and her need for assistance due to her medical condition.
