Wes Anderson Set to Premiere ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ at Cannes

Focus Features is reteaming with director Wes Anderson for a third time, partnering on global distribution rights deal for his upcoming film “The Phoenician Scheme”. The movie will have a limited release in the US on May 30 and expand globally on June 6. A premiere at the Cannes Film Festival is likely, as Anderson has a history of launching his films there.

Anderson co-wrote the screenplay with Roman Coppola, who also collaborated with him on “Asteroid City” and “Moonrise Kingdom”. The film tells the story of a family and their business, starring Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, and Tom Hanks among others. Anderson’s American Empirical Pictures banner will produce the movie alongside Indian Paintbrush.

The partnership brings together Focus Features with Universal Pictures for international distribution. This deal builds on the success of “Asteroid City”, which opened in six US theaters and received a standing ovation at its Cannes premiere last year, grossing $142,000 per theater. Anderson won an Oscar for his Netflix short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” last year.
