West Nile Virus Cases Spike in Minnesota Statewide

Minnesota health officials have reported two deaths from West Nile Virus in the state so far this year, with 20 cases confirmed. The virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites, and risks are higher in western and central areas where mosquitoes thrive.

Heavy summer rain and heat have contributed to the surge in cases. Symptoms may not appear until weeks later, including mild fever, headaches, and muscle aches, but can be severe for older people and sometimes lead to life-threatening complications like encephalitis or meningitis.

There is no treatment for West Nile Virus other than supportive care. To protect yourself, wear protective clothing when outdoors, maintain window screens at dusk and dawn, and use insect repellents with up to 30% DEET.
