West Nile Virus Confirmed in Wisconsin, First Case Reported

Wisconsin Department of Health Services (WI DHS) has confirmed the first case of West Nile Virus in the state this year. The infected individual is from Barron County. Additionally, mosquitos collected in Milwaukee and Lafayette Counties have tested positive for the virus.

According to WI DHS, West Nile Virus spreads through mosquito bites that come into contact with humans, birds, and other animals. It is not transmitted directly from person-to-person or animal-to-animal.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, rash, and fatigue. Older adults are more susceptible to severe symptoms, which can be fatal in some cases.

Typically, Wisconsin reports 18 West Nile Virus cases each year. To minimize the risk of contracting the virus, reducing exposure to mosquitos is key.
