Mosquitoes in the Twin Cities metro area have tested positive for the West Nile virus, with Culex tarsalis mosquitoes found in high numbers. The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District processed 187 mosquito pools last week, and 34 were confirmed to be infected.
This is not unusual for summer months, but health officials are still warning people to take precautions against mosquito bites. Symptoms of the virus include fever, severe headache, rash, vomiting, joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes.
To protect themselves, residents can use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and stay indoors during peak mosquito hours, typically around dawn and dusk. The risk of serious illness is highest for older adults and those with weakened immune systems.
