West Nile Virus Spotted in South Louisiana Mosquitoes

A warning has been issued for residents of South Louisiana after several mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile Virus. The LSU Disease Diagnostic Lab received 26 mosquito samples, with three confirmed to have the virus.

Health officials are taking steps to mitigate the threat, including nighttime spray truck operations and larviciding treatments. Spraying will focus on parish parks, recreational facilities, and schools during the week.

Residents are urged to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquitoes. This includes eliminating standing water weekly, repairing broken window and door screens, using mosquito repellents with DEET or picaridin, avoiding outdoor activities during dusk and dawn, and wearing long, loose-fitting clothing when outside.

Mosquito control officials will continue to test samples and adjust their efforts as needed. Residents can check the spray zone map for more information on mosquito control operations in their area.
