West Texas Measles Outbreak Declared Over

The Texas Department of State Health Services has announced that the state’s largest measles outbreak in 30 years, affecting over 10 counties and three other states, is now over. The outbreak began in late January and resulted in 762 cases, with 96 people hospitalized and two deaths reported.

According to officials, the outbreak was brought under control through a comprehensive response that included testing, vaccination, disease monitoring, and public awareness campaigns. Commissioner Dr. Jennifer A. Shuford attributed the success to the efforts of healthcare professionals who identified and treated cases of measles.

While the outbreak is over, health officials stress that the threat of measles has not passed. The best protection against the highly contagious virus is to be immunized with two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which prevents more than 97% of measles infections.
