The West Virginia Attorney General has joined a coalition of 37 states and territories calling on the FDA to regulate online sales of certain weight loss and diabetes drugs directly to consumers. The coalition aims to address concerns over unregulated ingredients, contamination risks, and foreign substances in these products.
According to the West Virginia Attorney General’s Office, GLP-1 drugs such as Mounjaro, Zepbound, Ozempic, and Wegovy pose significant health risks due to their unregulated sources. The FDA is being urged to increase enforcement and regulations against compounding pharmacies that produce these drugs based on a patient’s needs.
The coalition is led by South Carolina, with over 30 states supporting the letter. West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey stated that “counterfeiters who are taking advantage of consumers and endangering their health and life must be stopped.”
