West Virginia’s Darian DeVries Hired as IU Men’s Basketball Coach

Indiana University has hired Darian DeVries, the former head coach at Drake and West Virginia, as its new men’s basketball coach. DeVries will sign a six-year deal with the school, replacing Mike Woodson, who announced his departure in early February.

DeVries spent one season at West Virginia before joining Indiana. He led the Mountaineers to a 19-13 record last year and shared similar aspirations for success as IU’s coaching staff.

“I’ve always admired IU Basketball for its championship-level success and tradition,” DeVries said in a statement. “As a coach, I share that desire to succeed at the highest levels.”

DeVries comes from a successful background, guiding Drake to three NCAA tournament appearances in his final four seasons as head coach. He also spent 20 seasons on staff at Creighton.

The Hoosiers have struggled with consistency under their previous coaches. DeVries will take over a program that has missed six of the past eight NCAA tournaments and advanced only three times since reaching the national championship game in 2002.

DeVries’ son, Tucker, played for West Virginia before missing the rest of his season with an injury. The school is expected to apply for a medical redshirt, which could extend Tucker’s eligibility.

Junior forward Malik Reneau also announced his departure from IU, choosing to enter the transfer portal after averaging 13.3 points per game this season.
