Western Michigan Broncos Win First Frozen Four Title Game

Western Michigan Broncos edged out defending champion Denver 3-2 in a thrilling overtime game on Thursday night, advancing to their first-ever Frozen Four title game. Owen Michaels scored the winning goal just 26 seconds into the second overtime, securing his team’s victory.

The Broncos dominated the game, taking a 32-8 edge in shots and scoring goals by Michaels and Brian Kramer in the second period. However, they blew a 2-0 third-period lead before Jared Wright tied the game with two minutes left in regulation.

Denver’s goalie Matt Davis made an impressive 44 saves, but was unable to stop the Broncos’ late surge. The Pioneers, who have won a tournament-leading 10 titles, were defeated for the first time this season and will now face Boston University in the championship game on Saturday night.

Western Michigan’s Hampton Slukynsky stopped 20 shots for his team, giving them their ninth win of the season and a single-season record for victories. The Broncos are making their 10th NCAA tournament appearance and have led by coach Pat Ferschweiler throughout the season.

In the other semifinal game, Boston University defeated Penn State 3-1 to advance to the championship game against Western Michigan. Jack Hughes scored two goals for the Terriers, including an empty-netter in the final minute of the game.
