The Western Michigan Broncos have secured their spot in the NCAA National Championship game, defeating Denver 3-2 in a double-overtime thriller on Thursday night. Owen Michaels delivered the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to send the Brown and Gold to the national title game for the first time in school history.
Michaels, who tallied two goals in the game, was joined by Brian Kramer’s lone score as Hampton Slukynsky made 20 saves to earn his 18th win of the season. The Broncos’ victory marked their program-best 33rd win of the season and their ninth-game winning streak, which they’ll look to extend on Saturday.
The game saw plenty of action in both regulation and overtime periods, with Denver holding its own despite a strong Broncos’ push. Western Michigan’s Hampton Slukynsky was dominant in net, stopping 20 shots to keep his team ahead until the final seconds.
Michaels’ winning goal came just over two minutes into the second overtime period, capping off an eventful game that saw both teams create numerous scoring chances. With the win, Western Michigan will face the winner of the Penn State-Boston University matchup on Saturday at 7:30 PM ET in a bid to claim its first NCAA National Championship title.
