Western Michigan edges Minnesota State in double overtime thriller

Western Michigan defeated Minnesota State 2-1 in a thrilling double-overtime game at Scheels Arena, advancing to the Fargo Region Championship on Saturday. Alex Tracy made 42 saves for the Mavericks but fell short of preventing the winning goal.

The game was tied 1-1 after three periods, with Kaden Bohlsen scoring for Minnesota State and Liam Vilente responding for Western Michigan. The momentum shifted in favor of the Broncos in overtime, as Grant Slukynsky scored on a rebound at 12:46 left in double overtime, securing the win.

Western Michigan’s 27-9-3 record is their tenth Division I NCAA appearance, with the team also winning the MacNaughton Cup and Mason Cup in the CCHA under new head coach Luke Strand. The Broncos improved from an 18-15-4 overall record last season to advance to the next round of the tournament.
