FARGO, N.D. — Western Michigan University’s men’s hockey team is set to face off against UMass on Saturday night at Scheels Arena, with the winner advancing to the Frozen Four in St. Louis, Mo. This would be the Broncos’ first appearance in the tournament.
The team has been playing consistently well, leading the nation with 31 wins and currently on a seven-game winning streak. Western Michigan also claims both the NCHC regular season and tournament titles, becoming the second team to achieve this feat in league history.
Sophomore forward Alex Bump is having an impressive season, scoring four goals in his last five games and recording a point in 20 of his last 23 outings. The Broncos’ offense has been explosive, with all four lines producing at least 35 points.
In goal, Tim Washe is making history as the team’s captain, breaking the single-season record for game-winning goals on March 15th. He will also break the program’s record for most games played in a Bronco uniform, surpassing Brian Tulik.
UMass has been playing strong hockey of late, with only one loss in their last nine games. The Minutemen have a strong offense led by Cole O’Hara and Aydar Suniev, while Michael Hrbal is starting nearly every game in net.
The Broncos have made the NCAA Tournament four times in the past five years, with consistent performances throughout. They currently rank third in the nation and are looking to make history with this win.
