Western Nations Condemn Iran’s Attacks on Foreign Citizens

A joint statement by 13 Western nations condemned Iran’s attempts to “kill, kidnap, and harass” foreign citizens, including dissidents, Jewish citizens, journalists, and current/former government officials. The nations, which include the US, UK, Canada, Germany, and France, highlighted that these attacks are a direct violation of national sovereignty.

The statement, backed by Albania, Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden, called on Iran to immediately put an end to such illegal activities in their territories. The Western nations consider these types of attacks as violations of their sovereignty and have committed to working together to prevent them.

Reports have long suggested that Iran has been engaging in covert malign behavior to target foreign citizens. This includes an attempted assassination of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 election, as well as a slew of Europe and US-based attacks last fall.

The UK has reported over 20 incidents since 2022 of Iran-linked plots to kill or kidnap British nationals or individuals on British soil. Journalists and activists in the US have also been targeted by Iranian murder-for-hire schemes and kidnapping plots, particularly in the wake of the 2022 mass protests following the death of Mahsa Amini.

Tehran has repeatedly denied its involvement in these attacks, but the Western nations are united in their opposition to Iran’s attempts to harm foreign citizens. The statement serves as an international rebuke and a warning to citizens across Europe and North America of the hostile activities Tehran is pursuing.
